Frequently Asked Questions

 
 
ACCESSIBILITY
Are any large print resources available?  There are large print hymnals and bulletins on the small table in the gathering area.  Large print editions of THE UPPER ROOM are also available.
 
Are there provisions for hearing assistance?  Hearing assistance is available at the sound booth in the back of the sanctuary.
 
Where can I park?  The parking lot is right next to the church.The first parking space on the street side of the parking lot is reserved for guests. This is close to the entrance to the church.
 
Is there parking for those whose mobility is impaired? The parking lot has reserved parking spaces for those whose mobility is impaired.  
 
Are there steps to get into the church? There are no steps to access the main floor of the church.  The gathering area, sanctuary, fellowship hall, pastors office, nursery, church office/library and restrooms are all on the main floor. 
 
Where can I sit if I'm in a  wheel chair or use a walker?  The sanctuary has pew areas designed for those who use wheel chairs or walkers.
 
CHILDREN & YOUTH
What provisions are made for children in worship? Children are valued participants in the worship service. There is a children's message each Sunday.  Quiet bags for younger children are available in the gathering area located on the bag tree.There are also special bulletins for children ages 3-6 and 7-12 available from the ushers.
 
Is there a nursery?  There is a staffed nursery for children five and under from 9:00AM till noon. 
 
Do children and youth participate in the worship service? Children who have received  acolyte training light the candles for the service.  Older children and youth help with the children's message.  Youth serve as greeters, ushers, and hosts on fifth Sundays of the year.
 
At what age can children begin Sunday School?  Children are invited to begin Sunday School when they are three years old.
 
Are there other activities for children?  During the school year, there is an after school program for kinderarten through sixth graders that meets on Wednesday afternoon,After School Kids @ nhumc.
 
What activities are there for youth? Middle school and high school youth are invited to Youth Group on Wednesdays during the school year.
 
 
COMMUNION
When is there Communion? Communion is usually a part of worship on the first Sunday of the month, most often by receiving bread and a small cup of grape juice.  
 
Who can take Communion?  The United Methodist Church practices open Communion. If you wish to take communion you are invited to come forward to receive the elements.  If you do not wish to receive communion simply remain in your seat. 
 
OTHER
 
How do people dress for Sunday services?   On Sundays, some wear jeans, some  dress-up, and the rest dress informally somewhere between the other two.
 
Am I expected to give? We give out of joy for what we have received. Giving is a part of our spiritual life. People give in many ways and at various times.  It is not expected that everyone will give weekly as the offering plate is passed.  Giving during the service is simply a traditional time to donate to support Christ’s church.
 
Where is North Highland UMC?    North Highland is in northeast Aberdeen.  It is to the east of State Street on 15th Avenue.   Click here for map.
 
Can I get a ride to church?  North Highland has a van service  to pick up folks who would like a  ride to church. If you want a ride to Sunday School or worship, please call the church (226-1279), or Pastor Mark's cell phone to arrange for  the van to pick you up.
