Message Summary
In the parable of the father and two sons (Luke 15:11–32), Jesus tells a story about a family shaped by labels: the rebellious younger son, the responsible but resentful older son, and a father whose love refuses to define either son by their mistakes or attitudes. While the story is often focused on the younger son’s return or the older son’s resentment, it also invites us to consider the unseen dynamics within the household, including the quiet presence of a mother who may represent patient love working behind the scenes. Ultimately, the parable reminds us that the labels we carry-lost, failure, resentful, forgotten—are not the names God gives us. In God’s household, grace restores identity and calls us beloved.
Reflection Questions
-
What labels—spoken by others or formed in your own mind—have shaped the way you see yourself? How might God be inviting you to release those labels?
-
Which character in the story do you most relate to right now: the younger son, the older brother, the waiting parent, or the unseen mother? What might God be saying to you through that perspective?
-
If God’s grace calls us “beloved,” how might living from that identity change the way you treat yourself and others this week?
